More Buwan ng Wika Activities

Still wondering what to do with your kids this month?  I noticed that Buwan ng Wika is usually a school affair but why let it be?  Homeschoolers can do their own thing too. Maybe these ideas will help you out.

1. Cinamalaya – so many interesting films to choose from.  This activity might be for older kids who will better understand and appreciate the theme of the films.  Click here to go to the Cinemalaya site.

2. Get to know Manila, the Old Manila – Old Manila Walks gives tours right here in the metro.  Take your pick from Intramuros, Binondo, San Miguel, FEU or the Chinese Cemetery. Old Manila Walks has their site here.

3. Watch a Filipino flick – I know there are a lot of cheesy Tagalog movies but there are great ones as well.  Anak (starring Vilma Santos) is a great one. Jose Rizal (starring Cesar Montano) is very historical and educational. Indie films 100 (starring Mylene Dizon) and Boses (Ricky Davao) are very powerful and inspiring.

4. Historical or heritage tour – There are so many tours now, as near as Cavite and as far as Ilocos.  Just pick one that will interest the whole family, will fit your budget and will be educational for thirsty minds.  Here’s an article from philstar.com on a heritage tour in Cavite and a travel journal of a blogger who did a heritage tour in Bulacan.

5. Check out Tagalog websites – tagalog para sa mga bata and digital dialects are a couple of sites. Can’t seem to find other educational sites in Filipino which is so sad and disappointing.

6. Visit the National Museum – If only to see the famous Spoliarium of Juan Luna.  Check the exhibits and collections. Then take a stroll at Rizal Park and come dusk, watch the dancing fountains.  National Museum website here.

Anyway, these are some activities I could think of and find. If you have other ideas, feel free to share!
